BIKE THEFT
STATISTICS
-
In just two years, bike theft increased by 70% as reported by the NYPD
-
In Seattle, more than one bike is stolen every hour
-
If you are a bike owner there is a 63% chance your bike will be stolen
-
On average, it is estimated that 1.3 million bike theft incidents occurred in the year 2006 alone, averaging about 2.5 incidents per minute. In reality, this number might be even larger—possibly even more than 5 million thefts per year (Johnson 2008). This discrepancy is largely due to how underreported bicycle theft is.
-
If we look at how many more riders there are now from the 2006 report and do the calculations we are looking at more than 10 bikes stolen every minute just in North America
